The San Diego – Imperial Valley - Northern Baja California region has gone further than any other area in the world in terms of establishing itself as the world leader in algae discovery, research, and innovation.
It is also poised to be the best of class home for algae commercialization.
Why is this area such a center of algae excellence?
Because no other region can match the region’s essential combination of abundant sunshine, world-class microbial, marine, and genetic research strengths, large flat areas of both arable and non-arable land nearby, nutrient-rich water resources, and strong societal interests in alternative fuels, water conservation, and sustainability.
Combined this has blessed the region as a natural incubator and catalyst for the development of a broad-based, and fundamentally-strong, long-term algae industry.
The Regional Algae Initiative has been formed to raise awareness of the economic development opportunities for investors, grant-makers, and policy leaders to share in the benefits of our growing algae industry development.
It is also responsible for sharing internally with our emerging algae community the resources and experience of our region’s rich heritage in collaboration and new industry development; and for organizing action steps and efforts which will foster and maintain our strategic advantages in algae industry leadership.
